I've used silicone / permatex numerous times on other engines (250 hondas etc) and the only time i've ever had trouble and had to use the correct gasket is in the main case and transmissions, they are particular about shaft endplay to set up proper shifting. The savage end cover by the look of the manual is simply to hold in oil So i dont think that permatex will hurt there. I just hope it was that thick grey stuff made for high heat/oil/vibration. The other grey stuff (Ultra grey by permatex) is junk for this application and will leak after a short time.
